Jesus came to give life, and this life comes through the Spirit.  The Spirit, like the wind, cannot be contained but continually overflows our preconceptions and our ways of doing things.  When the life of the Spirit moves on people, things like prayer begin to overflow their typical patterns.

The scripture says in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”

While I was preparing songs for worship this week, I came across one that I was not familiar with.  One of the lines reached out, grabbed me, bear-hugged me, slapped me around and engulfed my spirit.  Here’s the line from Jared Anderson’s Glorified, “The greatest joy I’ve found is to lay a crown before my King.”

Question: Who prays? Answer: Everyone prays. It is a natural part of the created order of things. Because God is our creator, we pray. He has hard-wired prayer into our makeup.

Sometimes we look at the Bible as a set of instructions to follow rather than God revealing Himself and His will to us.  Instead of looking at the Bible as some sort of self-help manual that will make our lives better if we do what it says, we need to see it in a different light.

Because God is love, the leading characteristic of those in whom God lives will be love.  Why is it then that the leading actions of those of us who claim to know God often are the opposite of love?

At times I am utterly amazed at the promises that the Lord gives to us in scripture. They seem to be too good to be true, especially when people use them to fill their own selfish ambition or wants.

In his famous sermon on the mount Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14, NIV)

When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was, he responded by quoting from the book of Deuteronomy. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30, NIV)

In the Academy award winning movie from 1976, All the President’s Men, there is a famous quote by the character Deep Throat where he says, “Just…follow the money.”  The implication was that when the money trail was followed, whoever was responsible for the conspiracy would be found.  Jesus once made a statement about money which has a surprising similarity.

To be a Christ-follower means, very simply, to be a person who follows Christ.  This statement may seem to be too obvious; however, the truth of it is wrapped up in its application.  It is so easy to make the claim of being a Christ-follower but to actually do very little practically in one’s life to do what Jesus says.

You’ve heard of required reading.  They are the books and articles that are necessary to read for doing well in a class.  If we are to do well in prayer, listening to the Holy Spirit is required.

Mark 10:16 (NIV) "And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.”

“Have a good day!  I love you!”  These are typically the words I send my children off to school with each morning.  They are words of blessing, and my children, as well as children everywhere, need to hear something like it.  We must take every opportunity to bless our children...

There is a problem with discipleship when Men of God don't step into their opportunity and responsibility to pray.  The scripture says that Elijah was a man "just like us" (James 5:17) who earnestly prayed.  Men, this is our calling.  Where are the Elijah's of today who will step forward and pray?

Numbers 22:28-29 (NLT)

“Then the Lord gave the donkey the ability to speak. “What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?” it asked Balaam. 29 “You have made me look like a fool!” Balaam shouted. “If I had a sword with me, I would kill you!”

The story of Balaam’s donkey emphasizes how hard headed we can be when the Lord is trying to get our attention.

Leviticus 25:18-19 (NLT)

"If you want to live securely in the land, keep my laws and obey my regulations. Then the land will yield bumper crops, and you will eat your fill and live securely in it."

In our land today there is not a sense of "living securely".  Even though the large majority still eat their fill, there is a sense of uneasiness and insecurity that is everywhere.  There are questions about the direction that the country is going and the reality of tougher economic times.

There is a saying that goes, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.”  When we are looking to grow in our ability to hear God’s voice, it is crucial that we learn all we can about what He has already said that is written down in the Bible.

Acts 3:1-6 (NIV) 1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!”

It is crucial for Christ-followers to learn to hear the voice of the Lord and to be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.  However, reading, understanding and obeying the written word is not enough, because we are to be “led by the Spirit.” (see Gal. 5:25)

Prayer Point

How do you pray?

From my experience in leading people in prayer for the past 20 years, I would say that the majority of people lack confidence in how to pray.  The scriptures give us clear teaching about prayer; however, prayer is not something that is learned only by studying about it.  Prayer is learned by doing.  My encouragement to you is to apply these principles in your times of personal and group prayer.  The Lord will meet you as you diligently seek Him.
